Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital began a rebuilding program in 2005, which is expected to be completed in 2018. The fifth of seven phases is now under way. The Douglas Foundation is proud to be funding this critical rebuilding initiative of the cornerstone of the region’s premier health system.
After the Northridge earthquake in 1994, the California state legislature enacted a bill that mandated that acute care hospitals be retrofit or rebuilt to withstand and remain functioning following a 6.0 earthquake. However, there was no state, federal, or local government funding to fulfill this requirement.
In response to the mandate, Cottage Hospital decided to replace all of its inpatient care facilities at an estimated cost of more than $900 million. Funding from the Douglas Foundation and other contributors has been critical to this initiative.
